A: Let me give you a few definitions or explanations first. Condyloma accuminata is the formal medical name for warts in the genital area. Warts are caused by a family of viruses called human papillomavirus (HPV); certain strains of HPV cause warts in the genital area and also can cause changes in the cervix (caused dysplasia and detected on Pap smears) that can progress to cancer of the cervix if not treated in time. So you can have HPV in the genital area (skin or vaginal tissues) which causes visible warts, or which is in the tissues with no visible warts, or which is in the cervix and causes dysplasia (changes which can only be seen on the Pap smear or a biopsy.) Any combination or just one of these changes from HPV can be present in a woman infected with HPV. When condyloma are treated (with freezing, or medicines, or the laser) there still MAY be HPV in the area where the wart was; this virus can still be transmitted to a male partner's penis or genital area. Having normal PAP smears means you have no evidence of HPV or of dysplasia in your cervix ONLY; it doesn't guarantee that other areas might not still have some HPV which in fact you still might be able to transmit to your partner. So it is still possible that you infected him despite having a normal Pap and no visible warts.
