A: A couple of things do come to mind. Pubic lice (also known as "crabs") can be transmitted from one person to another during close contact. It would cause a lot of itching and usually some red bumps on the skin, and you might be able to actually see the tiny lice or little white nits stuck to your pubic hair. Another type of bug that can be passed along is scabies, which can cause similar symptoms, but you don't see any lice. Pubic lice can be treated with the same over the counter meds as head lice, and sometimes these will also work with scabies. The rash might be something like tinea cruris (jock itch), which is a fungal infection of the groin, in which case you need an antifungal cream or medication to fix this. In any event, seeing your doc might be wise, as one quick look often gives you a definate answer and treatment plan. Remember, also, that your partner may need to be treated as well, to keep you both from getting exposed again. Thanks for the question.
